Mark Dion and Columbia MFA students visit VCU

VCUarts Departments of Painting & Printmaking and Sculpture & Extended Media hosted Mark Dion and his group of fourteen mentees from the Columbia University MFA Program last Tuesday night, February 25th. Traveling south from New York City as part of their weeklong intensive with Dion, the Columbia students met with a full itinerary here in Richmond.  The group began with a tour of Hollywood Cemetery given by an expert guide from the Valentine Richmond History Center. After making their way to the Sponge HQ in the VCUarts Anderson Gallery, a dinner was shared by all. Once properly fueled, each MFA candidate from among the three programs gave a short presentation about his or her work in a rapid-fire "five images in three minutes" format.  VCUarts grads opened their extra bedrooms and hospitable floor spaces to their colleagues from Columbia and a good time overnight was had by all.

Class w/ B Wurtz

A magical chance selection wheel, spin the bottle for art project pairings in class with B Wurtz.  The bottle is svedka vodka.  Somebody drew a number out of a hat last time and won pop tarts.  The person who drew the pop tarts made an in-bottle svedka infusion.  The concept is to take the new thing and make different art.  There was all sorts of random proj's.  A man returned a kettle-weight to target and walked away with 10 dollars store credit (scam).  A woman got another woman's piece and broke it and put it into her own piece.    Would you like to try a taste--spin the bottle on the table with 16 holes.  16 tea-holes for 16 people (15 grad students plus B Wurtz) was another person's thing.  The hot water and lemon went into the little holes and everyone had a sip.

Now each other's names are in the holes and getting exxed off one by one.  Too much fun:)

Good morning Columbia!!!
